The National Anticorruption Center has so far applied contravention fines to the value of over 2 million lei for electoral corruption. Another 1,000 reports received from the police are under examination, IPN informs.
Passive electoral corruption provides for the ascertainment of the facts of asking for, accepting or receiving by a voter, personally or through an intermediary, undeserved goods, services, privileges or advantages in any form, for themselves or for another person, for the purpose of exercising or not exercising the right to vote in elections. The fines rise to 37,500 lei. The NAC warns that the persons who committed the contravention are exempted from liability if they denounced or actively contributed to the discovery, counteracting of electoral corruption.
At the same time, the people who offer money to influence the results of an election risk one to five years in prison and a fine of over 50,000 lei. Illegal financing of political parties from prohibited sources is punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of over 67,000 lei. In order to ensure the recovery of the damage, the law enforcement institutions can seize the person's property.
