The National Anticorruption Center (NAC) has so far imposed fines of over 3.5 million lei on voting-eligible citizens who took bribes for voting. Law enforcement officials warn that those who report the bribery can avoid being fined, IPN reports.
Under the Contravention Code, passive electoral corruption represents the asking for, acceptance or receipt by a voter, personally or through an intermediary, of undeserved goods, services, privileges or advantages in any form, for themselves or for another person, for the purpose of exercising or not exercising the right to vote in elections, including regional elections, if the act does not constitute a crime.
The NAC is still examining the reports received from the police and will take decisions on them as well. Passive electoral corruption caries a fine of 25,000 to 37,500 lei.
Those who offer money to influence the results of an election risk from one year to five years in prison and a fine of over 50,000 lei. The illegal financing of political parties from prohibited sources is punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of over 67,000 lei. In order to ensure the recovery of damages, the law enforcement agencies can seize the person's property.
The persons are released from contravention liability if they denounced the deed or actively contributed to the discovery or countering of electoral corruption.
