Fines for driving under the influence could be increased

The fines for driving under the influence should be increased from 3,000 lei to 15,000 lei, while the inebriated motorists should be banned from driving for a period. Such a proposal was put forward by Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari in the March 18 meeting of the Cabinet, IPN reports.

The proposal was submitted in connection with the Premier’s request to identify solutions for reducing the number of serious road accidents, many of which are caused by drivers under the influence. “Serious accidents with persons hurt and deaths are reported weekly. Many of these are the result of driving under the influence,” said Pavel Filip.

The Prime Minister supported the minister’s proposal, saying any legal window allowing avoiding responsibility for causing serious accidents while under the influence of alcohol or drugs should be closed.

In another development, Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan said that a plan of action with a series of concrete measures was worked out to reduce the number of traffic accidents, but amending the legislative-normative framework is also a required measure.
