Final vote for assessment of integrity of candidates for SCP and SCM members

The parliamentary majority gave a final reading to the bill on the assessment of the integrity of candidates for members of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) and the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP), adopting it by the votes of 63 MPs of the Party of Action and Solidairty. The MPs of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists left the sitting in protest, while those of Șor Party dint come to the sitting, accusing the parliamentary majority of being “a vote machine”, IPN reports.

The bill provides for the creation of a specialized commission for assessing the integrity of candidates for administrative posts in the SCM and SCP. The commission will consist of six members. Three of them will be named by the development partners, while the others will be proposed by Parliament, according to the principle of proportionality between the majority and the opposition. The assessment commission will examine the property of candidates and persons close to them and their incomes and costs.

Before the Parliament’s legal committee for appointment and immunities presented its report, BCS MP Vlad Batrîncea said they cannot understand the lack of reaction and attitude to the recommendations of the Venice Commission. “We consider the bill contains unclear formulations that are not based on regulatory mechanisms and it therefore should not be discussed,” he stated.

The commission’s head Olesea Stamate said that consultations with those interested on the parliamentary platform and with the parliamentary groups were already held. “No representative of the opposition attended these consultations. This shows their interest in this bill,” stated the MP.
