Final report on damage caused by drought in Moldova to be presented to international donors on August 20

Experts of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the European Commission will submit to international donors the final report on the damage caused by drought in Moldova, to get some humanitarian aid. Moldova requested from international donors 300 thousand tonnes of agrifood production as humanitarian aid. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Anatolie Spivacenco, says that some embassies accredited in Moldova have already expressed their availability to grant Moldova humanitarian aid. Among them he mentioned the embassies of the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Slovenia. The donations could reach Moldova, only after submitting the official report made by international experts. The Government is already planning to distribute the humanitarian aid to farmers and the poor. The state is engaging in ensuring transparency for the whole process. Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev ordered setting up a special commission that would distribute all the humanitarian aid. The commission will be headed by Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Viorel Melnic. To date, the damage caused by drought is estimated at about 12 billion lei (1 billion US dollars).
