Filat’s case delayed once again in appellate court

A hearing scheduled for today in the second criminal case brought against Vlad Filat has been postponed for a second time. The Chisinau Court of Appeals was supposed to hear the former prime minister’s request to review a district court ruling that had denied him recourse to the Constitutional Court.

Like last time, Filat had a medical excuse for not being able to attend. Victor Munteanu, Filat’s lawyer, told reporters his client has suffered a cervical nerve block and that on June 5 a doctor prescribed him a two weeks’ treatment, which was only started on June 10, as Filat had to wait for the prescribed medicine to arrive.

This time the hearing has been postponed until June 26.

In the second criminal case, Vlad Filat is being accused of having laundered large amounts of money that he had gained by passive corruption and influence peddling during his tenure as prime minister. On the latter charges, Filat was sentenced in 2016 to nine years in prison.
