Filat: Yeltsin-Snegur agreement 18 years ago demonstrated Russia's involvement in Transnistrian conflict
The signing by the then Russian President Boris Yeltsin of the Moldovan-Russian ceasefire agreement demonstrated Russia's involvement in the Transnistrian conflict, declared Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat at a talk show on the national television, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Premier described the agreement, signed on July 21 eighteen years ago, as “dramatic for our country”. “This document clearly demonstrates the involvement of the Russian Federation in that armed conflict”. He argued that a country can sign ceasefire agreements only if involved in such military actions and, therefore, shares responsibility for them.
Vlad Filat said he always had this belief and was ready to formulate such statements whenever needed, including during meetings with the current Russian officials.
On July 21, 1992, the then Moldovan President Mircea Snegur and Russian President Boris Yeltsin signed a ceasefire agreement, putting an end to a brief yet brutal war that preceded the establishment of the internationally unrecognized republic of Transnistria.
