Filat says those who break law must answer

The former president of Banca de Economii (BEM) Grigori Gacikevici was detained and questioned by prosecutors. He is investigated as a suspect in the case of the delinquent loans released by the bank when he headed it. Referring to Gacikevici, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that those who break the law must answer for what they did, Info-Prim Neo reports. Asked why the former president of the BEM was arrested only now, the Premier said that the prosecutors should be asked why they reacted so late. He also said that inferiors of Gacikevici may also be arrested. The National Bank of Moldova informed that in 2010-2011, when the post of BEM president was held by Grigore Gacikevici, there was granted the highest number of dubious loans that cannot be now recovered. According to the BEM, in 2012 the bank sustained losses of over 300 million lei. Over 55% of the loans are delinquent. The state holds a majority holding in the BEM. The president of the bank’s Board Victor Bodiu said the situation at the bank can be stabilized in spring. The authorities assure that the depositors of Banca de Economii will encounter no problems.
