Filat disappointed by Interior Ministry's report
“The terrorist act on Wednesday, October 14, demonstrates that there are forces in Moldova which are hostile to the idea of a state based on the rule of law”, declared Minister of Interior Affairs Victor Catan at the Ministry's Board meeting on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a press release from the Government.
Catan said the number of offenses declined in the last 9 months by over 7 percent, but expressed his dissatisfaction with the high crime rate in Chisinau, which is in disproportion to the numbers of police forces concentrated here, more than a half of the total.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubco and Justice Minister Alexandru Tanase.
The prime minister said he expected a broader approach to the problems concerning police activity, as “not reports and figures are important, but high performance”.
Zubco, for his part, called for stronger cooperation between the police and the prosecutorial authority. Talking about the April events, Zubco said his office received 103 complaints from the citizens and 31 criminal cases were initiated against policemen.
Alexandru Tanase recalled that Moldova has the dubious reputation of being a country were torture is applied and urged the Ministry of Interiors to take measures for discontinuing the practice of applying torture in the process of collecting evidence. Tanase added his ministry will work together with the Interiors Ministry to establish the Judicial Police.
