Filat and Ghimpu have different stances on early elections
Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Speaker Mihai Ghimpu, who are leaders of the Alliance for European Integration, have different opinions about the early elections. Filat accepts early elections and says the government must create conditions for holding them, while Ghimpu says new parliamentary elections must take place only in four years.
The two leaders made statements for the press after the members of the Alliance held a meeting immediately after Friday's sitting of the Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“It will be regretful if the President of Moldova is not elected. However, the country must be governed in the interests of the citizens. We must create conditions for holding early elections after July 2010. It will probably be a difficult period, but we must go through it,” Filat said.
“What early elections? What for? Parliamentary elections will take place in only four years. I consider we must modify the procedure for electing the head of state by referendum so that the President is elected not by 3/5 of MPs, but by 50 MPs+1,” Mihai Ghimpu said, stressing that the head of state must be elected by the present Parliament.
Only the Alliance for European Integration's candidate Marian Lupu will run in the second round of the presidential erections on December 7. He must gain 61 votes and needs eight more votes from the Communist Opposition as the Alliance holds only 53 seats.
If the President is not elected on December 7, the Speaker will dissolve the Parliament, but not earlier than July 16.
