Fight against corruption must be basis of development of society, MP

The deputy chairman of the Parliament’s commission on legal affairs, appointments and immunities Vasile Grădinaru said that the fight against corruption must be the basis of the development of Moldovan society. Namely because of corruption, the Republic of Moldova stagnates and even regressed at particular stages.

In a public debate hosted by IPN, the parliamentarian said that the government came up with a very clear strategy, based on a number of pillars. First of all, it goes to the intensification of the fight against corruption. Discussions were organized with the institutions responsible for combating corruption, where their representatives invoked the lack of independence, legislative impediments, but also the inappropriate equipment.

As a result, the government sent a clear message urging the law enforcement agencies to act according to the law, independently. A series of legislative initiatives followed to strengthen the legal levers so as to ensure institutional autonomy for the responsible bodies.

Vasile Grădinaru noted that the delayed examination of cases in court using various pretexts, such as requests for postponement, replacement of judges, lifting of exceptions of unconstitutionality, is a major problem. To stop abuse, the use of these mechanisms was limited.

The law stipulates the appointment of judges in office for life. Another measure was the external evaluation, a painful and lengthy process, which pursues the goal of forming a body of upright judges and prosecutors, said the parliamentarian.

He also said that further efforts are needed, including from the Prosecutor's Office.

"When you started 100 cases and 90 of them failed, it means that either you initiated them unjustifiably, or you badly handled them and they ended up in court. In my opinion, the result is measured by convictions. This is what the citizens are waiting for. As quickly as possible. And the Prosecutor's Office must make a very big effort," stated Vasile Grădinaru said.

The public debate entitled “Combating corruption: Moldova's commitments in the EU accession process" was staged within the framework of the project "IPN News Agency for Social Cohesion and a Pro-European Moldova", funded by IMS.
