Fewer students chose vocational schools

The number of students in state secondary vocational schools during the 2009/2010 academic year decreased by 0.9%, while in private schools – by 6.1%. At the same time, the number of students whose studies are financed from the state budget increased by 5.2% compared with the previous year, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics. The female students in secondary vocational education total 18,100, making up 56.3% of the total number. As many as 9,500 students were admitted to colleges at the start of the 2009/2010 academic year, a decrease of 11.7% compared with a year before. The most popular faculties are, in descending order: economy, medicine, service sector, pedagogy, constructions, mechanics, informatics and information systems, etc. A number of 7,100 persons graduated from colleges in 2009, a 6.9% increase compared with last year. Forty-seven secondary vocational schools (colleges) worked in Moldova at the start of the 2009/2010 academic year, as the previous year. Forty-one of them are state-run institutions, while six are private institutions.
