Fewer children go to school after they turn 16

Some 83.6% of the children aged between three and six attend an education institution. In urban areas, this figure stands at 81.1%, while in rural areas at 84.9%. In the 16-18 age bracket, the school enrolment rate is of 74.3%, while in the 19-23 age bracket of 41.9%, shows the 2014 population and housing census, IPN reports.

The enrolment rate in education is higher for children aged between 7 and 15, which is the mandatory age for enrolment in general compulsory education. Thus, 99.4% of the children aged between 7 and10 are enrolled in the national education system. In the case of children aged 11-15, this figure stands at 98.6%.

Some 56.8% of women continue their studies in higher education, while men choose mainly vocational schools - 56.4% of the persons enrolled in average professional education.

The children’s access to preschool education services differs by territory. The children in Cantemir, Stefan-Voda, Cahul and ATU Gagauzia have the highest access to education, while those in Anenii-Noi district and Chisinau and Balti municipalities have the lowest access.
