Fewer cases of domestic violence reported in 2015

The number of cases of domestic violence has decreased compared with last year. In the first eight months of 2015, the police recorded almost 1,300 such cases, as opposed to 1,500 cases in the corresponding period last year.

As many as 1,190 women and 173 men were affected by such offenses. The sector police officers of the local subdivisions sent yet to court more complaints than in the first eight months of last year. To make sure that the victims were protected from domestic violence, the police supervised 573 restraining orders.

Over the eight months, the Police Inspectorates received 5,920 complaints over family relations, as against 6,931 in 2014. Of these, 594 cases were recorded as a result of the measures taken by sector police officers.

In this connecting, on September 16 the General Police Inspectorate, in partnership with representatives of the Women’s Law Center, the Chisinau Family Protection Division and NGOs, held a meeting to sum up the results of the activities initiated within the project “Improvement of response to domestic violence and of implementation of protective orders by developing and piloting a mentoring mechanism in two pilot-districts”.

Within the project, the implementation of restraining orders issued by courts and supervised by the police was monitored in the pilot-districts. The members of the implementation group provided the necessary legal assistance. There were also identified the problems and shortcomings in the process of implementing and supervising protective orders.
