Female driver investigated for injuring child on zebra crossing

A female driver is being investigated after striking a child on a pedestrian crossing. Ion Roscovanu, Road Safety inspector of the Chisinau Traffic Police, told Info-Prim Neo that the accident took place on a signage-marked crosswalk on Mircea cel Batrin Blvd. An 8-year-old boy was crossing the street on green when he was hit by an Opel-Astra vehicle driven by a 40-year-old woman. The boy was admitted to Valentin Ignatenco Hospital with brain concussion. After the investigation is completed, the women could be fined or even convicted. Ion Roscovanu urges pedestrians to make sure there is no car that could hit them, even if they cross the street on pedestrian crossings, as drivers often ignore such road signs. At the same time, drivers must slow down when approaching crosswalks, offer priority to pedestrians even if the zebra lines have wiped off. Given the current weather conditions, the duty of the drivers is to drive very carefully. According to Roscovanu, the thick fog in this period is an obstacle to the traffic flow because of low visibility. The fog is associated with the possibility of some roads being wet, which leads to a low tire adherence to the surface of the street. Under such circumstances, drivers are urged to slow down and turn on headlamps during the day, too, in order to prevent accidents, the cited source said. Over the past day, traffic agents registered 13 minor accidents, and fined 558 persons, including 8 for drunk-driving, 64 for jaywalking, 21 for driving unbuckled, 152 for speeding and 61 drivers for neglecting traffic lights.
