Feasts of Sts Mary Magdalena and Martyr Phocas observed Aug. 4

The Orthodox Christian who follow the Julian calendar on August 4 commemorate Saints Martyr Phocas and Mary Magdalene. Those who bear the names of the two saints celebrate their name day, while others honor the patron saint of the house, IPN repots.

Mary Magdalene was a Jewish woman who traveled with Jesus as one of his followers. She is said to have witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Within the four Gospels she is named at least 12 times, more than most of the apostles. The Eastern Orthodox churches also commemorate her on the Sunday of the Myrrhbearers, the Orthodox equivalent of one of the Western Three Marys traditions.

Saints Martyr Phocas honored God by his death. The people associate this feast with fires and other calamities, but the martyr actually has nothing to do with these.

According to the Church, the feast days are an occasion for meditation and recreation, not for abusing alcoholic beverages and are a reason for preparation for eternal life, for the relationship with God.
