The Orthodox Christians on May 6 celebrate the feast of the Great Saint Martyr Gheorghe the victory-bearer, who is one of the most known and venerated saints of Christianity. Priest Nicolae Burlacu, of the Chisinau Church “Saint Teodora de la Sihla”, said that the holy, glorious and right-victorious George was a fearless fighter against paganism, IPN reports.
According to the priest, the trophy-bearer George was a Christian Roman soldier killed under Diocletian at the beginning of the fourth century. “Embracing Christianity, he was an example for the other soldiers, whom he encouraged. That’s why the Christians consider him a victory-bearer. He honored Stephan the Great and Holy and permanently had his image on the battle flag,” stated Nicolae Burlacu.
On this day, the Christians are urged to go to church to honor Holy Martyr George and take part in the liturgical service. “As we are in the Bright Week, this feast is special and the service is also special. It is accompanied by hymns and icons are brought to venerate the saint,” said the priest.
The Christians in rural areas use to place grass and willow branches on gates. Saint Gheorghe is celebrated both by the Orthodox Church and by the Roman-Catholic Church. His image is always associated with bravery and faith in the Christian Church up to supreme sacrifice.
