Farmers seek stable mechanism to limit import of grain and oilseeds

The Association “Force of Farmers” demands that the Government should introduce a stable and sustainable mechanism for limiting the import of grain and oilseeds, similar to those instituted in Romania and Bulgaria, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Association says that the absence of restrictions on the import of grain and oilseeds will not only unbalance the market but will also endanger the export of wheat, corn and sunflower seeds to Romania, which not only once warned Moldova about the danger of reexport of grain and oilseeds to Ukraine. The blocking of exports to Romania would be a catastrophe for Moldovan farmers.

The Commission for Exceptional Situations for the period of the state of emergency introduced a system for authorizing grain and oilseed imports. According to farmers, even if the measure was applied with delay, this stopped the collapse of prices on the domestic market and the corn, wheat and sunflower prices over the past two months even have grown slightly.

Recently, the authorities announced that the state of emergency will be lifted at this yearend and all the Commission for Exceptional Situations’ decision will be automatically annulled as from January 1, 2024. The Association “Force of Farmers” said they possess information that Trans Oil company intends to import about 300,000 tonnes of sunflower seeds from Ukraine and this will again affect the interests of national farmers.
