Those who sowed corn this year expect the harvest to be much better than last year as the preconditions are now optimistic. Contacted by IPN, the chairman of the National Union of Agricultural Producers Associations “Uniagroprotect” Alexandru Slusari said the only concern is that there may be a surplus of moisture.
According to Alexandru Slusari, the corn develops very well. But things can change by September, when harvesting begins. “The farmers are afraid that the corn may be affected by rain, as the wheat. The yield is projected to be large, but there is a risk that the corn may decay in the field,” stated the chairman of “Uniagroprotect”.
Several thousand hectares of corn were already damaged by the latest rain with hail. “The situation is unpredictable. The rain falls all over the country and we cannot see where the situation is better or worse. Hail fell in all the districts this year,” stated Alexandru Slusari.
Last year, the corn harvest was 1.7 tonnes on average per hectare or by about 40% lower than in 2011.
