The protesting farmers intend to block with tractors the Leușeni customs post so as to hamper the import and export. In solidity, the farmers protesting in the central square of Chisinau started the tractors and honked the horns and then blocked Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Blvd to vehicle traffic for a period, IPN reports. “The mechanics are now at the Leușeni customs post and will block the customs post and the haulage of freight, the import and export from the country,” said protester Sergiu Stefanco.

Andrei Dînga, a farmer from Ștefan Vodă, said that 2020 was an awful year for farmers. It started with drought and then they mounted protests where they were humiliated by the government. The officials didn’t find solutions for the farmers and veterans or for mayors. The famer called on everyone to stage a common protest where to say that they no longer want to be ruled by thieves and want a future at home. He also called upon the EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko to help the farmers and to invite them to a roundtable meeting to discuss the situation and identify solutions as the government doesn’t do anything.

Political commentator Anatol Țăranu, who came to welcome the protesters, told them that they are the most conscientious part of society. According to him, Parliament adopted laws at night as they are afraid of the farmers. He advised the organizational committee of the protest to contact other protesting segments and to invite them to central Chisinau. “If this political class discredited itself, you must create another political class and organizational effort is needed for the purpose,” stated the commentator.

The protest continues at 11am on December 24.

Update /14:22/ Contacted by IPN for details, Raisa Novitski, spokeswoman for the Border Police, said a number of tractors were parked by the side of the road that goes to the customs post, but the movement of vehicles to and from wasn’t blocked. “They didn’t create impediments on the entrance or exist from the Leușeni checkpoint. We hope it will remain a peaceful protest,” stated Raisa Novitski.
