FAO offers seeds to Moldovan farmers

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations will provide support to the most vulnerable Moldovan agricultural producers affected by last summer’s floods through two emergency projects, Info-Prim Neo has learnt from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. The beneficiaries will receive by 20 kilograms of hybrid corn seeds. The first batch of 200 tonnes of seeds will be distributed to about 10,000 agricultural producers from 15 districts affected by last year’s floods (Anenii-Noi, Briceni, Cantemir, Criuleni, Dubasari, Edinet, Floresti, Leova, Ocnita, Rezina, Rascani, Soroca, Soldanesti, Stefan-Voda, Ungheni). The second consignment will consist of about 250 tonnes of hybrid corn seeds that will be distributed to selected beneficiaries from other districts. The flood waters from the Nistru and Prut last year caused damage to Moldova’s agriculture estimated at over 129 million lei. There were inundated 34,430 hectares of farmland owned by economic entities and peasant farms, 14,600 hectares of land adjoining houses and 5,000 hectares of cropped fields.
