Adopters choose mainly healthy children younger than three. Not many families are ready to adopt children suffering from diseases, brothers and sisters or children older than three. Therefore, there are children put up for adoption and a sufficiently high number of applications for adoption, but not in relation to these children. The issue was discussed in a roundtable meeting staged by the Chisinau Child Rights Protection Division on the occasion of the International Day of Families on May 15, IPN reports.

The Division’s head Svetlana Chifa said the Division has records concerning 115 children with adoptable status, of whom only one is younger than three. Twenty-two children are in the process of being matched.

Another 42 form part of groups of siblings of 2-5 children. As many as 28 children suffer from incurable diseases, while 20 suffer from treatable diseases. About 100 persons filed applications for adoption to the Division.

Svetlana Chifa noted that the roundtable meeting was held with the aim of sensitizing and informing the people about the adoption procedures so as to eliminate the prejudice concerning this process. They also want to encourage and promote the national adoption so as to increase the chances of children to be adopted in the country. The Division’s specialists are discussing with the applicants so as to convince them   that the children older than three can also be adopted as these better realize the family’s gesture and adjust themselves as well as the younger ones.

To adopt a child, the persons must file an application to the local child rights protection bodies and present a set of required documents. The applicants are assessed by a joint commission and a matching period follows. When a child is adopted, the adoptive family is being monitored by the authorities for a period.
