The adviser to the Parliament Speaker Fadei Nagachevski said the procedure for dismissing Eduard Harunjen from the post of prosecutor general that was initiated by the legislative body is not an anti-constitutional step and a dangerous precedent, as they rumor. According to him, this is a systemic formula for removing the prosecutor general, IPN reports.
“Parliament didn’t use formulas from outside the system, exclusive formulas. This is a normal and reasonable formula,” the adviser stated in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel. Fadei Nagachevski said the prosecutor general is removed at the suggestion of the Superior Council of Prosecutors when the ordinary dismissal procedure is followed. But there is also another procedure, when the President ascertains that the appointment procedures weren’t obeyed.
Political commentator Victor Ciobanu said the current situation is shameful for Eduard Harunjen. When the whole society seeks his resignation, he should have the courage to leave. The parliamentary majority didn’t fully realize the importance of the own statement on state capture. “In exceptional situations, all the state institutions are outside the legal limits. That’s why a kind of tribunal consisting of prosecutors and judges is formed to free the captured institutions,” stated the commentator.
According to him, such a tribunal should take legal action against Eduard Harunjen as a key figure who took part in the state capture.
Expert in political sciences Ernest Vardanean said the Prosecutor General’s Office plays a key role in Moldova. Nowthis institution is the “last bastion” of the former power that prevents the starting of criminal case and the disclosure of things. “I’m sure Euduard Harunjen regrets that he is not allowed to leave. This does not justify his acts, but characterizes the system built by Vladimir Plahotniuc,” he noted.
The Presidential Office on July 10 announced the decree to end the term in office of the prosecutor general will be issued by this weekend, immediately after all legal conditions are met.
