Extremely close score in referendum: 50.10%-49.90% with 98.1% of vote reports counted

According to the preliminary data presented online by the Central Election Commission, the results of the referendum on amending the Constitution to enshrine Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it show a close score between the supporters and opponents of this amendment. Out of the total of 1,456,186 valid votes cast, those who voted “No” have a slight advantage, with 50.10% (729,561 votes), compared to the 49.90% of those who voted “Yes” (726,625 votes). The difference is of almost 3,000 votes.

These are the results after 98.11% of the vote reports (2,177 out of a total of 2,219) have been counted.

By close to 08:00 a.m., 181 of the 231 vote reports from the diaspora or 202,832 valid votes were centralized. Knowing the pro-European option of voters from abroad and considering a turnout of 239,479 thousand people, it is expected that the votes to be centralized will tip the balance towards a greater support for the “YES” option.

The law will be considered adopted if the majority of citizens who participated in the referendum vote “Yes”.

The last to vote in the October 20 election were the Moldovans in Canada. The polling stations in Calgary and Vancouver closed today at 07:00 a.m. Chisinau time.
