Extraparliamentary parties criticize initiative to introduce mixed electoral system

President Igor Dodon’s initiative to switch over from the party-list proportional representation system to the mixed-member electoral system is actually a strategy worked out long ago by Vladimir Plahotniuc, consider heavyweights of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA) and “Our Party (PPPN). A presidential adviser argues in favor of the initiative. The issue was developed in the talk show “Expert hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.

PPPN deputy chairman Ilian Casu said Igor Dodon’s initiative forms part of an older agreement reached with Plahotniuc. “The mixed electoral system is the real goal pursued by Plahotniuc as this system suits him. The two reached such an agreement earlier. The strong argument is that Igor Dodon didn’t subscribe to that statement against the uninominal voting system that was signed by the leaders of a number of parties. Renato Usatyi talked to Dodon and suggested that this should sign such an initiative. But he didn’t because Plahotniuc didn’t allow him to,” stated Casu.

PPPDA deputy chairman Alexandru Slusari also thinks that Igor Dodon and Plahotniuc reached an agreement. “It is a duo between the elder brother Plahotniuc and younger brother Dodon. The arguments invoked by Dodon are irrelevant and have no legal basis. These are arguments typical of a second grader,” he noted.

The President’s adviser Maxim Lebedinski in the same program said Igor Dodon proposed introducing the mixed-member electoral system in order to minimalize the possible risks. “Judging by your logic, Maia Sandu is also Plahotniuc’s ally as she rejected Igor Dodon’s proposal to sign an anti-Plahotniuc statement in the election campaign,” stated the adviser.
