Exports of services will exceed 40% of total exports this year, economist

Moldova’s exports in 2023 will rise modestly, but exclusively due to the exports of services. The exports of services for the first time will exceed 40% of Moldova’s total exports, said expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” Veaceslav Ioniță. According to him, the national economy does not have competitive sectors with remarkable results, such as the service sector. The IT sector is the most dynamic service sector that developed the past few years, IPN reports.

“The 21st century is the century of services and the Republic of Moldova should actively and powerfully enter this market. It should develop the IT and BSS (business support systems) sectors as this enables to increase the Moldovan exports, to number of jobs in the country and to have salaries higher than the national average,” stated the expert.

Veaceslav Ioniță noted that Moldova’s exports this year will grow exclusively due to the service sector. After a spectaculars and unprecedented growth the last two years, goods exports this year will most probably decrease by about US$400 million.

“Agricultural production this year, in terms of volume and price, is not similar to that of 2021/2022. Reexports to Ukraine have declined. The IT and BSS sectors will really enable to increase exports that this year will rise to US$820 million. In total, Moldova’s exports will grow modestly, but exclusively due to the service sector. The exports of services for the first time will exceed 40% of the Republic of Moldova’s total exports,” explained the expert.

According to him, the Government should now develop these two service sectors that enable to increase Moldova’s exports, the number of jobs and salaries.
