Expo marking 25 years since fall of Communism in Romania held in Chisinau

Fifteen banners depicting the fight against Communism in Romania are on view in the Stefan cel Mare si Sfant square in Chisinau. The exhibition is organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute “Mihai Eminescu” in Chisinau, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Romanian Embassy in Moldova, the Romanian National Museum of History and the Chisinau City Hall, IPN reports.

Nichita Danilov, deputy director of ICR “Mihai Eminescu” in Chisinau, opened the exhibition by reminding that on December 22, Romania will mark 25 years since the fall of communism. “The end of the Communist regime was the end of an abominable regime that we hope will never reappear in history. Those were dark times for us”, said Danilov.

The chairman of the Moldovan Writers' Union, Arcadie Suceveanu, remarked that many young people attended the opening of the exhibition, people who didn't live during the Communist regime but can learn the lessons of history from the exhibition's banners. The writer added that the result of the parliamentary elections on November 30 proved that the Moldovan people didn't learn from history and many still voted for Socialism and Communism.

Historian Andrei Nicolescu, reviewer for ICR, recalled that the Revolution began in Timisoara on December 17, 1989, and its symbol was the occupation of the national TV. According to Nicolescu, Romania paid the price for its freedom and became a European country.

The banners will remain in the square until January 10, 2015.
