Experts expressed differing opinions as to televised address of President Nicolae Timofti to the people of Moldova in the evening of November 24. The issue was discussed in the program “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.
Political analyst Anatol Taranu approved of the head of state’s gesture. “The President noted that we had a number of chances that we missed and urged us not to miss this current chance. The November 30 vote is very important. If the pro-European parties lose the elections, we will leave with the same problems for at least one more decade,” he stated.
Journalist Vitalie Andrievschi also considers that Nicolae Timofti did it right when he gave such a speech. “The voters must understand that we either go forward or go backward. Forward means Europe with its modern standards, while backward means the Customs Union,” he stated.
However, the program’s permanent invitee Igor Botan disapproved of Timofti’s address. “I don’t like what the President did. He should have remained neutral and should have avoided campaigning in favor of particular parties,” he stated.
Journalist Dmitri Chubashenko also said the head of state acted incorrectly. “The people have the right to change the government if they want to and nobody can prevent them from doing this,” he noted.
In his speech to the nation, Nicolae Timofti said that country’s fate depends on the November 30 vote: “It is important to understand a simple, fundamental thing – our future and the future of our children and grandchildren depend on how we vote on November 30. The country’s destiny is decided now.” He concluded by calling on the nation to follow the example of Romania and Ukraine so that we do not find ourselves on an isolated island, between two pro-European neighbors. “Let’s vote together for a European future,” he urged.
