Experts from 46 states discuss electoral systems in Chisinau

More than 100 persons from 46 countries, who have the status of observer at the Council of Europe, are attending the tenth European Conference of Electoral Management Bodies that is taking place in Chisinau on June 26-27. For the first time, the event is held in a country that is not an EU member state, IPN reports.

“We expect that this event will enable us to share the accumulated experience. We have what to show to our foreign partners, including in the areas of financing of political parties and using of information technology in elections,” said the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Iurie Ciocan. The conference focuses on the Code of Good Practice in Electoral Matters and the electoral practices in the Council of Europe member states.

Attending the event, President Nicolae Timofti said the task of the electoral authorities is to make sure that the people are able to express their will freely, while the Central Election Commission must follow attentively how the parties are financed and intervene promptly to prevent and punish cases of voter bribing and multiple voting.

The head of state underlined that the CEC must persevere in applying information technology so that the idea of electronic voting takes shape. Possibilities should be created to enable the people to vote at any polling place, regardless of their place of residence.
