Experts explain low voter turnout

The disappointment in the political class is the main cause for the low voter turnout, said experts invited to the talk show “Reply” produced by Prime TV channel, IPN reports.

Victor Mocanu, chairman of the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova, considers the explanation for the low voter turnout is psychological rather than economic in character. “The people are disappointed,” he stated.

Promo-Lex Association head Ion Manole said the voters had great expectations and these weren’t met. There was no communication between voters and election runners or it was deficient.

Executive director of the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova Viorel Furdui said the low voter turnout is due to the stagnation of reforms. “All the actions taken by the government lately influenced the voter turnout. Things practically didn’t change and the reforms stagnate, including in the area of the local public administration,” he stated.

Within a telephone call during the program, president of the Central Election Commission Iurie Ciocan said the voter turnout is lower than in the 2011 local elections, but the current elections will be validated because the minimum voter turnout of 25% was achieved.
