The message addressed to the Moldovan government by the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola was a harsh one and shows that Moldova cannot file an application for joining the EU yet. Such conclusions were formulated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Journalist Ion Terguta said that Tapiola’s message shows Moldova has yet to make considerable effort before submitting an application for becoming a candidate for accession to the EU. “Our country cannot file an application because it is not sufficiently prepaid. Moldova lost the pace in the electoral period and then in the political crisis, with the problems experienced in the banking system worsening the situation. The government must make enormous effort to overcome the situation. By the ambassador’s message, the EU tried to anticipate a number of problems,” he stated.

The dean of the Faculty of Law of the Moldova Free International University Alexandru Cauia considers Tapiola’s message was the harshest one so far. “Regretfully, the European integration for our country became a way that we must follow immediately for achieving an objective in the distant future. Judging by the problems enumerated by Tapiola, we are far from becoming integrated into the EU,” he stated.

Media analyst Cristian Tabara said Tapiola’s message was a successful combination of diplomatic language and realism. “Tapiola drew attention to the vulnerability to which Moldova is exposed. Though he didn’t say it directly, the diplomat drew also attention to the Gagauz problem. This report should be taken into consideration not because Moldova is yet unable to file an application for accession, but because the environment in the country must be improved,” he stated.

The 2014 ENP Progress Report for Moldova, presented by the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola on March 30, contained a series of recommendations for the Government, including reviewing the Constitution for preventing institutional deadlocks, dealing with the problems faced in the banking system, improving the business climate, eradicating corruption, doing the justice sector reform, settling the Transnistrian conflict and strengthening the protection of human rights.

It was earlier projected that Moldova will file an application for obtaining the status of candidate for accession to the EU at the Riga EaP Summit of this May.
