The executive director of the Foreign Policy Association Victor Chirilă said the visit paid by the President of the European Council to Chisinau is a clear message that the European Union sees a reliable partner only in the person of President Maia Sandu. Political commentator Nicolae Negru noted the high-ranking EU official avoided meeting with other officials in Chisinau so as to show that the European Union woks only with trustworthy partners who are supported by the citizens, IPN reports.
According to editorialist Nicolae Negru, the visit paid by Charles Michel to Chisinau after a period of international isolation is a clear signal of EU’s support for President Maia Sandu. The European official refused to meet with representatives of other state institutions as they trust only the presidential administration in Chisinau.
“The other representatives of the legislative and executive powers are not trusted by the European Union. Ciocoi is acting Prime Minister and he does not represent a political force. As to Grechanyi, it is known that she does not take decisions, while a meeting with Dodon is considered useless by the European Union,” Nicolae Negru stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
Victor Chirilă, executive director of the Foreign Policy Association, said that to fully restore the relationship with the EU, free and fair snap parliamentary elections should be held in Chisinau and a pro-European Government should be then voted in.
“The message of the President of the European Council was addressed to the political class, primarily to the politicians who identify themselves with the European values – that snap elections should be held as swiftly as possible so that the EU has a reliable partner in all the political institutions in Chisinau and we fully restore the relations with the EU,” he stated.
According to Victor Chirilă, the European Union will never accept representatives of state institutions who are in conflict with the law or are involved in corruption schemes as dialog partners.
“The European Union works only with credible partners. President Sandu opened a window of opportunity so as to restore the relations with the European Union. However, for the EU to help us more, we need a credible parliament and a credible government,” stated Victor Chirilă.
The President of the European Council Charles Michel paid a visit to the Republic of Moldova on February 28, making it the first visit made by an EU official after a period of international isolation that lasted for several years. In his speech, the official said the EU will help Moldova to implement reforms and to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.
