Despite the overblown and to some extent amusing statements by President Vladimir Voronin, who says he doesn’t need Romania because he can speak directly with Javier Solana, it has become obvious that the European Union recommends Moldova, explicitly and by all means, to improve its relations with Romania, given that trade between the two countries has soared up as a result of the Russian embargo, political analyst Dan Dungaciu was quoted by Romanian Global News as saying. In the expert’s opinion, despite the “third way” concept, the “East-West synchronisation” oratory, or the concept of “Moldova is an exception”, which loom heavily in the official speech of the authorities in Chisinau, the reality proves they are wrong. “If you want to enter an economic, political or cultural space, like the EU for instance, you have to truly adopt its values and do more than just a half of the way. Otherwise, it’s hypocrisy or naivety”, Dungaciu said. Referring to the Romanian citizenship issue, the commentator says it is not just bilateral (Moldovan-Romanian). The issue concerns the EU, too. This subject mustn’t be neglected by any of the parties involved, he says. “The Romanian citizenship is a ticking bomb, and it will explode in the European Court”. In his opinion, Romania might find itself someday a defendant in Strasbourg, sued by thousands of Moldovans because it fails to give them a fundamental right in compliance with its own laws.
