Expert report on National Philharmonic fire presented

After the National Philharmonic “Sergey Lunkevich” was destroyed by fire and the ceiling collapsed, this turned into a risky area, with the Big Hall, the stage and the adjoining areas and the upper part of the Small Hall posing the biggest risk, says the preliminary technical expert report presented by the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, IPN reports.

The metal constructions, under the action of the high temperature of flames, lost stability and can no longer be used. Some wall sections became fragile and the used materials became less resistant, posing a danger of collapse. The excessive volume of water used to extinguish the fire worsened the state of the supporting structure and increased substantially the weight of the construction elements that can lead to collapse later.

At the current stage, it is not possible to thoroughly examine the supporting structure of the construction so as to formulate conclusions and proposals about the subsequent measures. When the works to take away the debris are completed, the given procedure will be performed. The working group recommended the central public administration authority in the field of culture to carry out a feasibility study concerning the reconstruction of the National Philharmonic, by assessing the necessary costs, and to design the project conception of the future similar facility.

The National Philharmonic “Sergey Lunkevich” was seriously damaged in a fire two weeks ago. The firefighters localized the fire in over four hours, but fully extinguished it only the next day. The ceiling of the main hall of the building collapsed.
