In 2015 Moldova’s Government spent 5.3 billion lei on healthcare. The money was allocated mainly to national, district and municipal hospitals and to family doctors centers. In this regard, the independent think tank “Expert-Grup”, through the agency of Budgetstories.md, published the first infographic of a series, which shows how much money was spent in the health facilities of all levels, IPN reports.

According to the infographic, the National Clinical Hospital, the Oncological Institute and the Mother and Child Institute are among the most ‘expensive’ hospitals. Their annual budgets exceed 120 million lei, while the budget of the National Clinical Hospital totals 390 million lei a year. Also, the costs of treated cases at these institutions are the highest and experts presume that this is also because of the complexity of the treated cases. About 1.25 million patients visited these hospitals annually (between 2010 and 2016) either for consultation or for treatment, but less than 15% of the visits were made to prevent particular diseases.

The data of the National Center for Health Management show the number of visits to the Oncological Institute rises annually by 2,000 on average, while the number of cases of cancer increases by over 300 a year. A patient stayed in the national hospitals for 13 days on average. 62% of the patients were from rural areas. The average salary of an employee of the national hospitals is about 3,500 lei.

Some 16% of the services provided by the national hospitals are for money. Over 80% of these services are offered by the University Dental Clinic of the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics and by the National Dental Polyclinic.

A patient’s stay at the Clinical Traumatology and Orthopedics Hospital costs over 4,000 lei, at the Phtiziopneumological Institute – about 2,000 lei, while at the Mother and Child Institute – only approximately 800 lei and at the National Narcological Dispensary – less than 700 lei.
