“WatchDog” association expert Valeriu Pasa said that by the announcement made about the new local mayoral elections in Chisinau, the Democratic Party repeats the presidential election scenario. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, Valeriu Pasa said it was expected that the PDM will not have a candidate for the elections in Chisinau as it is known that the party has a very low rating in the capital city, IPN reports.
According to the expert, the fact that the PDM announced it will not field an own candidate in elections does not mean that there will no be candidates of Vlad Plahotniuc and there will be at least three candidates. Vlad Plahotniuc’s favorite will be the candidate who will be proposed officially by the Party of Socialists, as it happened in the presidential elections. Vlad Plahotniuc said then he will support Maia Sandu, but worked hard for Igor Dodon in the campaign.
“Vlad Plahotniuc said he wants an alliance with the pro-European parties against the Socialists, but I don’t know why the TV channels of Mister Plahotniuc from morning till evening discredit the pro-European leaders and say nothing negative about Igor Dodon and the schemes in which this was involved,” stated Valeriu Pasa.
He noted he considers Vlad Plahotniuc wasn’t honest when he said that the Democrats are ready to support a common candidate of the pro-European parties so as to prevent the Socialists from taking control of the Chisinau City Hall.
According to the “WatchDog” expert, acting mayor Silvia Radu does not have experience and is not able to attract the sympathy of the citizens of Chisinau, but this does not mean that she will not take part in elections. However, she will not be considered a serious candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau.
Valeriu Pasa said it is very hard to say now who and what chances have in these elections, but theoretically it’s clear that a representative of the right and another one of the left can reach the runoff. But the PDM will make effort to try and solve the problem in the first round of voting. In the new local elections, there will be lists of people mainly in suburbs that will be registered in a large number overnight.
