Political analyst Mihai Cernencu, who heads the Department of History and International Relations of the Moldova Free International University, called on Iurie Leanca not to use the name “Social Liberal Party” as his former colleagues from the PLDM suggest. The call was made in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.
According to the expert, this name would affect the image of the new political project of the former Premier because the parties that have the word ‘social’ in their name are not really successful. “There is nothing unusual in the fact that the PLDM reserved a number of possible names for the party. But the fact that these were registered at the beginning of this month, after Leanca announced his intention to launch a new political project, is questionable. Those from the PLDM acted so in order to protect the party,” said Cernencu.
He considers that Iurie Leanca’s chances to launch a successful political project are very great. “Polls show that Iurie Leanca continues to have the highest rating among the politicians even if he is no longer Prime Minister. None of the former Moldovan Premiers managed to keep such a high rating after leaving this post. This is due to the fact that Leanca built his authority as foreign minister and then as head of the Government and the people trust him. It’s not excluded that Leanca’s project will be joined by people from the PDM and PL, not only from the PLDM,” stated Cernencu.
The analyst said there are preconditions for a successful project also because Iurie Leanca managed to become a leader. “In Moldova the political parties didn’t become political institutions that would really promote people’s interests. Our parties bank on the leader, not on the name or doctrine. If the leader disappears, the party also disappears. Not many people remember the Renaissance and Conciliation Party of former President Mircea Snegur or the party “Randunica” of ex-President Petru Lucinschi,” he explained.
According to press reports, the PLDM registered three party names, including the one that Leanca intended to give to his political project. On a social networking site, Iurie Leanca placed a harsh comment. In reply, the PLDM’s secretary general Victor Rosca said the party he represents is ready to concede the name “Social Liberal Parry” to Leanca.
