A draft decision regarding a 10% increase in expenditures for the nutrition of children in Chisinau’s kindergartens is set on the agenda of the Chisinau Municipal Council’s session scheduled for Thursday, March 15. The draft provides for the allocation of about MDL 2 mln, from the state’s available means. As many as 145 kindergartens are operating in Chisinau. They are attended by about 27, 350 children, who are provided with warm meals 4 times a day. The daily expenditures for the nourishment of a child are of MDL 10.5. In three institutions of children suffering from TB and another six institutions of mentally and physically disabled children, the children are fed gratis. Their meals cost 18 and respectively, 11 lei a day. According to sources from the Education, Youth and Sports Division, the assortment of products has broadened lately. Now, children are eating more fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products and fish. Concurrently, to improve the nutrition of children, in 99 institutions, parents subsidise the nourishment of children. In 2006, the parents of about 3,400 children, including of over 800 who were fed gratis, enjoyed discounts for kindergarten tuitions. For the last year and first months of the current year, the Education, Youth and Sports Divisions in the districts have purchased food products worth over 32 mln lei.
