An exhibition dedicated to Nicolae Milescu Spataru on the occasion of the 380th anniversary of his birth was mounted at the National Library on June 8. In the opening of the event, there was presented the encyclopedist’s biography and books about his life and works, IPN reports.
Academician Valeriu Matei, who staged the presentation together with the Romanian Cultural Institute in Chisinau, al, ethnographic and cartographic works.
The presented works included the Greek-Slavic-Romanian-Latin Dictionary (17th century) by Nicole Milescu Spataru, which was transcribed and annotated and an introduction by Alexandru Nichitici was added to it. The dictionary has 1,552 pages and was printed based on a manuscript dating from the 17th century, which was discovered by researcher Alexandru Nichitici in Kiev, at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The dictionary’s register includes about 17,000 Greek words, at least 6,000 Slavic words, more than 24,000 Romanian worlds and a series of Latin terms.
Nicolae Milescu Spatarul was a Moldovan scholar, translator, traveler, geographer and diplomat who worked both in Moldova and in Russia.
