Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat will continue to stay in prison. The Chisinau Appeals Court on April 27 rejected the appeal of Vlad Filat’s lawyers against the judgment of the Buiucani Court by which the remand detention was extended for 30 days. The announcement was made by prosecutor Adriana Betisor after the hearing, IPN reports.
According to lawyer Igor Popa, the Buiucani Court’s judgment is unfounded. “The Appeals Court should have assessed again the circumstances based on which this decision was taken. We do not see the Appeals Court to be that guarantor of the respect for the right to liberty of citizen Vlad Filat,” he said.
The lawyer also said that the judges of the Buiucani Court didn’t consider a group of Moldovan artists and Liberal-Democratic MPs as an authority and these didn’t serve as guarantors for setting free the ex-Premier. However, MP Igor Dodon was accepted as a guarantor in the case of the Petrenco group and this group was released. “Such double standards in implementing the law in our country are inadmissible,” stated Igor Popa.
