Ex-Premier Vlad Filat remains in custody

Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat will continue to stay under arrest. On April 5, the Chisinau Appeals Court rejected the appeal filed by the ex-Premier’s lawyers against the Buiucani Court’s judgment by which the remand detention was extended by 30 days, IPN reports.

Prosecutor Adriana Betsisor told the press that the appeal was rejected as groundless. “The fact that the appeal was rejected shows that the reasoning of the Buiucani Court’s judgment by which the remand detention was extended by 30 days is plausible,” she stated.

She also said that the former Premier didn’t take part in the examination of the appeal. The defendant filed an application asking to be spared from the necessity of appearing in court without providing arguments.

The next hearing in the case of Vlad Filat was set for April 6.

Vlad Filat was deprived of parliamentary immunity and arrested on October 15, 2015. He faces 7 to 15 years in prison for influence peddling and passive corruption and ban on holding particular public posts. He pleads not guilty.
