Ex-Premier Vlad Filat remains in custody

Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat remains under arrest. The Appeals Court on March 10 rejected the defense’s request to annul the Buiucani Court’s decision by which the remand detention was extended by 30 days, IPN reports.

Prosecutor Adriana Betisor said the request of Vlad Filat’s lawyers was dismissed as unfounded. “The Appeals Court rejected it as groundless. The examination of the case will go on,” she stated.

Lawyer Igor Popa said that today’s decision by the Appeals Court showed once again that the case of Vlad Filat is a political one. “The Court’s judges didn’t take into account either the defense’s arguments or the decision of the Constitutional Court. By the decision of the Buiucani Court, the pretrial detention period for Vlad Filat was extended based on a norm that was declared unconstitutional,” he stated.

The lawyer also considers that the decision is absurd and unsupported. “We witness the same orchestrated process when unsubstantiated decisions are passed like on a conveyor belt,” said Igor Popa.

A new hearing in the case of the ex-Premier will take place at 10:30am on March 11.
