The Appeals Court accepted the anticorruption prosecutors’ request and ordered to remand former MP Sergiu Sîrbu back in custody, at the remand prison of the National Anticorruption Center, for a 30-day period.
The information was confirmed for IPN by spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office Mariana Cherpec. Sergiu Sîrbu, who is investigated for unjust enrichment, was under house arrest. Earlier, Anatolie Zagorodnîi was also ordered back in custody.
Five former MPs were arrested on February 2 as a follow-up to an older investigation into the defection of a group of Communist MPs to the Democratic Party back in 2015. Anatolie Zagorodnîi, Sergiu Sîrbu, Vladimir Vitiuc, Artur Reșetnicov and Violeta Ivanov are all prosecuted for unjust enrichment. The first four were transferred from custody under house arrest last week, while Violeta Ivanov has been under house arrest pending trial since February.
