Ex-member of Anti-Mafia Movement fields himself for president

Lawyer Ilie Rotaru, a former member of the Anti-Mafia Movement, put himself forward for the post of head of state. In a news conference in November 1, he said he submitted the file to the special commission for the organization of the presidential elections on October 27, but has not been yet registered because he did not provide the required medical certificate and confirmation that he is supported by 15 MPs, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ilie Rotaru considers he deserves holding this post because he has higher education, is a university lecturer, works in the field of law, is a lawyer and a person who can cooperate and form a professional team. In the news conference, Ilie Rotaru called on the parliamentary parties to support him. “I ask the political parties, their representatives in Parliament to support me as a politically unaffiliated candidate for the presidency,” he said. Asked who should hold the other important positions in the state, Ilie Rotaru said the leader of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin should be Head of Parliament, the leaders of the PDM and PL, Marian Lupu and Mihai Ghimpu − Deputy Speakers, while the head of the PLDM Vlad Filat should continue occupying the post of Prime Minister. He also said that Valeriu Lazar and Igor Dodon should be Deputy Prime Ministers, while the ministers should be selected by the Premier, but 42% at the suggestion of the PCRM, while 58% at the suggestion of the AEI. Ilie Rotaru believes that there should be adopted a new Constitution, not later than one year after the election of the head of state. He said a number of institutions must be reorganized, including the Supreme Council of Magistrates, the Supreme Court of Justice, the National Bank, and the Audit Office, while the prosecutor general should be dismissed. The lawyer said that if he is not registered as a presidential candidate because he is not backed by 15 lawmakers, he will go to court because he considers that the given provision is unconstitutional. Ilie Rotaru, 57, is married and has two children. He was a member of the Democratic Party and head of the PDM’s organization in Chisinau’s Buiucani district. Immediately after the elections of July 29, 2009, Ilie Rotaru left the party. He said he stopped all kinds of activities when he submitted the file to the commission.
