Ex-judge to be investigated for passing illegal judgment

Acting prosecutor general Eduard Harunjen was authorized by the Superior Council of Magistracy to take legal action gains an ex-judge of the Rascani District Court who consciously passed an illegal judgment and abused his position, with both of the offenses having serious consequences, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Prosecutor General’s Office says that persuaded by a group of Russian citizens, a number of representatives of law enforcement agencies of Chisinau municipality, including police officers, prosecutors, lawyers and judges, fabricated a criminal case in order to investigate the appropriation of over US$30 million from a state-owned Russian company. The case was started illegally as the offense was committed on the territory of another state and the competent authorities of this state didn’t ask to initiate an investigation in Moldova.

In July 2011, the judge who examined the case passed judgment after one hearing, convicting three persons, two of whom from Russia, who were put on the wanted list. The punishment for the two Russian citizens was evidently milder than the law provides and no decision was taken as to the payment of compensation for the caused damage. The judgment was sent to the unrecognized bodies of the Transnistrian republic for being implemented.

According to prosecutors, the representatives of the law enforcement agencies of Chisinau municipality acted in collusion with persons from the Russian Federation so that these could avoid accountability for a very serious crime in Russia.

The judge is among the 15 current and former judges who are investigated for involvement in the laundering of billions of dollars from Russia through the Moldovan banking system.
