The former head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova William Hill said no significant changes in the Transnistrian settlement process have been seen during the past 15 years and there is no consensus as regards the future status of the Transnistrian region as part of the Republic of Moldova. The issue was discussed in the talk show “Friday with Anatolie Golea” on TV RTR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
“The positions remained mainly the same as in the 1990s. This means that the status of the Transnistrian region is being discussed, but a solution hasn’t been identified,” stated William Hill.
According to him, the situation in the Transnistrian settlement process can be now rather suitable for extending the discussions. Any solution to the Transnistrian conflict should represent the interests of the people from both banks of the Nistru. However, the recognized representatives of the two sides should meet and come to terms over the important problems.
Security expert Rosian Vasiloi said Moldova made no headway, but particular bodies on the left bank of the Nistru advanced by formulating own positions. These very consistently promote a particular strategy and position as regards the international recognition of the Transnistrian region and do it well. Particular bodies from Moldova and other states are also involved in this process. “The key to this solution is here, in the Republic of Moldova, as we should decide what we want from the Transnistrian settlement and if we want it in general,” stated the expert.
Vladislav Kulminski, executive director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives, agreed that this conflict on the Nistru is used by particular elites in the own interests to enrich themselves. In this case, the official Chisinau should be the responsible administration that deals with the serious resolution of this problem of the Republic of Moldova.
