The former head of Basarabeasca district, together with his deputy and the technical manager of the District Council, were convicted of passive corruption, the first being arrested in the courtroom, while the other two were put on the wanted list. The trial lasted for over two years and a half, IPN has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The prosecutors proved that the culprits asked and received money to which they were not entitled from the director of a company. Being members of the commission for approving the works carried out at the community center “Speranta” of the Basarabeasca District Council’s Social Assistance Section, delayed signing the acceptance certificate, asking for 30,000 lei from the director of the company that performed the construction works.
In the summer of 2012, the director of the company transmitted the money in three installments through the technical manager of the District Council, which was afterward shared by the culprits.
The former district head was sentenced to seven years and a month in jail and fined 20,000 lei. The former deputy head of the district got eight years and a fine of 20,000 lei, while the former technical manager – seven years and six months and a fine of 20,000 lei as well as 160 hours of community service.
The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
