A former deputy head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office is investigated for large-scale passive corruption. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in 2018, when the suspect worked as a prosecutor, this asked €50,000 from a convict, IPN reports.
In exchange for this money, the prosecutor was to reclassify the deeds and drop the charges in the case that was then pending at the Chisinau Appeals Court. The man was sentenced to 12 years in jail for appropriation attempt and money laundering.
The sum was passed on to the prosecutor by the convict’s partner in a public house in Chisinau. Later, the prosecutor dropped the initial charges and asked that the convict should be set free. The Appeals Court took these circumstances into account and ruled in favor of the convict.
The suspect no longer works in the prosecution service. This does not accept blame and is now investigated outside remand. But the preventive measure will be decided after indictment.
The press reported that this is the ex-deputy head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Adriana Bețișor, but this information hasn’t been confirmed.
