A former head of the National Investigation Inspectorate of the Ministry of the Interior was arrested by anticorruption prosecutors for unjust enrichment and passive corruption, IPN reports.
According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the former functionary from Chisinau, aged over 40, was involved in different illegalities that favored the commission of other offenses. He managed to disguise ill-gotten gains as legal revenues. As he shrank from criminal liability, he was put on the wanted list.
He obtained different property whose value was considerably different from the one indicated in his tax returns for that period. He registered a private house, apartments and cars, bank accounts with tens of thousands of euros and dollars in the name of close relatives. Furthermore, he could use the illegal income to maintain his child outside the country.
The former functionary was arrested based on a warrant issued in December 2016 after the authorities requested Interpol to list him wanted.
