A former woman employee of a commercial bank’s branch based in Drochia got five years and four months in jail for appropriating over 2 million lei from the accounts of clients, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in 2010-2015 the woman, who worked as a senior specialist responsible for accounts at the bank, withdrew over 2 million lei from the accounts of 17 depositors and appropriated the money. She issued orders to release money in the absence of depositors and transferred the money to accounts managed by her. Afterward, she erased the relevant data from the information system.

The illegalities were identified as a result of inspections carried out at the bank. In 2015 the woman was discharged from her post.

Besides the jail term, the woman was also obliged to pay damages to the bank. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
